Even for the well intentioned, keeping track of exercise can be a difficult task. The devices, like pedometers, commonly used to monitor physical activity provide only a crude measurement or are not something most people would wear all day.

The Bodybugg is an attempt to create an activity monitor that people would be willing to wear during most of their waking hours.

Developed by the Apex Fitness Group and BodyMedia, which specializes in wearable computers, the Bodybugg straps on the arm. Astro Teller, the chief executive of BodyMedia, described it as being "larger than a matchbox, smaller than an MP3 player."

Thirty-two times a second, the device collects a range of body measurements, including the skin's electrical resistance and temperature. An accelerometer monitors body motion.

The data is downloaded wirelessly to your computer, which then sends it over the Internet to BodyMedia. Computers there analyze the numbers and, through a Web interface, create charts showing things like the difference between your calorie intake and your burn rate.

The Bodybugg may be wireless, but there are strings attached: it will be sold only as part of a package of training sessions at fitness centers. Dr. Teller estimates that the device and a year's software analysis will add about $300 to the cost of most programs. IAN AUSTEN
