Yahoo launch online music service

Yahoo is to launch a European version of the firm's online music subscription service, following its US debut.

Yahoo Music Unlimited allows customers to play tunes from a catalogue of more than one million songs and transfer tracks to portable devices.

It also allows users to share music with friends through Yahoo Messenger.

A Yahoo spokeswoman said the company planned to offer the service in all countries with a Yahoo music site - but had no launch date yet.

No details were given regarding the cost of the European service.

Current US subscribers pay an introductory trial price of $4.99 (£2.66) per month on an annual basis, or $6.99 (£3.73) per month, on a month by month basis.

The service is seen as direct competition with established providers such as Napster and RealNetwork's Rhapsody.
