XM Satellite to introduce audio device with Audible

NEW YORK (Reuters) - XM Satellite Radio (XMSR.O: Quote, Profile, Research) on Tuesday said that next year it will introduce devices that can play both satellite radio and programming from spoken-word digital audio provider Audible Inc. (ADBL.O: Quote, Profile, Research)

XM said the portable, handheld satellite radio will allow users to download via the Internet shows from Audible -- whose focus is spoken-word content -- and onto the devices' memory.

Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Audible offers digital audio programs from audio-book publishers, broadcasters, entertainers and magazine and newspapers publishers.

XM and Sirius Satellite Radio (SIRI.O: Quote, Profile, Research) , rivals in the nascent market for nationwide pay-radio services, have each hinted that they would eventually develop a satellite radio device that includes the ability to store downloaded songs, similar to MP3 players and iPods. Neither has set an exact date for such a device.

Audible and XM on Tuesday also said Audible will offer subscriptions to certain XM talk programs via Audible's Web site this year, such as "The Bob Edwards Show."

XM will produce an Audible audio-book program for broadcast on XM's service consisting of interviews, and news focusing on audio books and other spoken-word features available on Audible's Web site

Shares of Audible rose 5.7 percent to $17.26 before the bell on the Inet electronic brokerage, up from the $16.33 close on Nasdaq. XM shares climbed 1.2 percent to $33.89 on Inet.
