We're Off to See the Wizard, to Set Up the Remote Television, cable box, DVD player, VCR, TiVo, audio components - as home entertainment systems expand, so does the pile of remote controls on the couch. Lassoing all your electronics with a universal remote can simplify things. The new RC9800i wireless remote control from Philips Electronics does more than just command your various audio and video boxes: with its built-in Wi-Fi networking, the RC9800i can also stream audio files from your computer. The remote, available next month at www.store.philips.com, will sell for around $600 and comes with its own recharging cradle. It has a built-in database of infrared codes to control more than 1,100 electronic products. To keep it current with new products, the RC9800i can be connected to a computer with a U.S.B. cable for software updates from the Internet. With its network connectivity, the remote updates its own TV listings and works with media software from Philips to stream music from a computer to its integrated speakers and display photos on its 3.5-inch color screen. The RC9800i has its own Web site at www.homecontrol.philips.com, with tutorials on functions like MP3 streaming and using the remote to do multiple tasks with one push of a button. For those worried about programming the device in the first place, the remote comes with a set-up wizard to guide you. After all, simplification can be a complicated process. J. D.
