Sorrent launches Glu Mobile as cell phone gamer LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - U.S. game developer Sorrent Inc. on Wednesday launched Glu Mobile, a line of entertainment products for cell phones including games, cartoons and sports news. Privately held Sorrent bought European technology provider Macrospace Ltd. for an undisclosed sum last December, and decided to combine and rebrand both companies' cell phone products as Glu Mobile, Jill Braff, Glu Mobile senior vice president of worldwide marketing said. "Our hope is to create something that's bigger than the sum of its parts," Braff said. "We see ourselves as one of the major entertainment companies creating and providing that entertainment that people are looking for when they go to their phones." Glu Mobile will offer more than 100 entertainment applications including games, ringtones, screens and information based on original titles and linked to major consumer brands such as Atari, Cartoon Network, FOX Sports and Nickelodeon, the company said. Content can be accessed through wireless providers or from the company's Web site. Glu Mobile, based in San Mateo, California, said it will be available to more than 800 million cell phone subscribers through 90 carriers worldwide. Glu Mobile products are compatible with Java, BREW and i-mode software for cell phones, the company said. Industry analysts estimate that the mobile content market will create revenue of up to $59 billion by 2009, compared with $17.6 billion in 2005. Games account for about a third of that total, according to Juniper Research.
