Police chief's plea over e-mails
Essex Police staff are being urged not to send e-mails on Wednesdays in an attempt by the new chief constable to make people talk to each other.
The request by Roger Baker to make one day a week e-mail free was posted on the force's intranet site on Friday.
He said on Wednesdays until further notice, e-mails should only be used where "urgent or strictly necessary".
Instead Mr Baker wanted his staff to pick up the phone or walk along corridors and communicate face-to-face.
'Bring a toothbrush'
In his statement Mr Baker said many e-mails were not necessary, asking staff: "Would you like to consider making a phone call?"
He admitted there were situations where e-mails were appropriate, but declared that Wednesdays "will be e-mail free days... as far as possible".
It is the latest effort by the new chief constable to stamp his mark on the force since taking over the role in July.
In his first public statement after arriving, the 46-year-old told criminals visiting Essex to "bring your toothbrush because you will not be going home".
He then ordered his officers to arrest at least 600 criminals during his first week in charge.
A police spokesman said: "From August 1, 2005, it has been declared that, as far as possible, Wednesdays will be e-mail free days.
