PalmSource Reports Its Chief's Departure

PalmSource, which develops operating system software for hand-held computers and phones, said yesterday that David C. Nagel had stepped down as president, chief executive and director.
The company gave no reason for Mr. Nagel's departure, which was effective on Sunday.
It named Patrick McVeigh, 53, senior vice president for worldwide licensing, interim chief executive while the board searches for a permanent successor.
Mr. Nagel, 60, will stay through mid-July in an advisory role.
Mr. Nagel joined Palm Inc. in 2001 to run the hand-held computer maker's software unit, which eventually was spun off as PalmSource. Mr. Nagel, a former AT&T chief technology officer, was named chief of PalmSource later in 2001 and helped take the company public in 2003.
Stock in the company has crumbled since its initial public offering, falling from about $40 a share to its Monday Nasdaq close of $8.89.
The company's software is primarily used in pocket-size personal digital assistants. Demand for the P.D.A.'s has slowed sharply after rapid growth only four years ago.
PalmSource, based in Sunnyvale, Calif., has recently tried to add relationships with makers of cellphones.
