Novell Posts Loss in the Second Quarter Novell, a seller of network software and consulting services, reported a second-quarter loss yesterday, missing analysts' estimates because of higher costs. Shares fell in extended trading. The net loss was $15.7 million, or 4 cents a share. In last year's period the company had a loss of $15.4 million, or 4 cents a share, after adjusting for payments on preferred shares. Sales rose 1.2 percent, to $297.1 million, in the period ended April 30. Novell is facing difficulty turning itself into a seller of Linux operating system software as the market leader, Red Hat, "continues to dominate from a mind share perspective," said Mark Murphy, an analyst at the First Albany Corporation. Shares of Novell, which is based in Waltham, Mass., fell 51 cents, or 8 percent, to $5.77, in extended trading after results were released. Excluding some costs, Novell broke even on a per-share basis. The company's operating expenses rose 7.8 percent, to $186.1 million. Changes in foreign currency rates added $8 million to sales and reduced the net loss by $2 million. News Sourcehttp://www.nytimes.com
