Lost in Translation via E-Mail
Lost in Translation
Via E-Mail
Q. I have been trying to send an e-mail message in Spanish to Mexico but I don't know enough Spanish to type it myself. Are there any free translation programs I can use?
A. A number of Web sites can translate a small amount of text from English to Spanish, including Google's Language Tools page (google.com/language_tools) and the Babelfish translator at babelfish.altavista.com. But these sites may not be the most accurate when you need to take nuance, colloquialisms and regional variations into account.
Sites that specialize in translation software for e-mail and word-processing documents include Free Translation (freetranslation.com) and Systran (systransoft.com).
If you intend to do business or correspond frequently with people speaking a different language, consider a professional translation program or service where human beings convert communications.
Staying Secure,
Even in a Hot Spot
Q. What are the security implications of using a public wireless network, like a coffee shop "hot spot"?
A. Wireless networks are popping up all over the place - in coffee shops, hotels, bookstores, airports and other locations. When you are out from behind your corporate firewall or home-network router and on a public network, your laptop's data can be at risk from intruders - but you can keep it more secure when traveling.
Both Windows XP and Mac OS X come with a basic software firewall to help keep intruders out of your computer's files, so turn it on in your system's settings if you haven't already. Getting an all-around Internet security suite that includes a firewall and antivirus protection for your system gives you even more control - some programs, like PC-cillin Internet Security from Trend Micro, let you easily switch and save your Windows security settings between different types of networks.
Before logging onto a public network, disable the file and printer sharing function on your laptop, because it can invite strangers to wander through parts of your computer. On the latest version of Windows XP, go to the Start Menu, to Control Panel, and open the Security Center icon. Click on Windows Firewall, then on the Exceptions tab, and under Programs and Services, uncheck the box next to File and Printer Sharing. In Mac OS X, go to the Sharing area in System Preferences.
As for e-mail, ask your Internet provider if it supports secure connections like encrypted Web mail, or see if you can get a Virtual Private Network connection from your office's technology department.
Microsoft has a list of tips and suggestions for further hot spot safety for Windows at microsoft.com/atwork/stayconnected/hotspots.mspx. Apple has details on the security features in the latest version of Mac OS X at apple.com/support/tiger/accounts and information for older versions of its systems at apple.com/support.
Getting the Tiger
In the Mac
Q. Do you erase the whole hard drive to install the new version of Mac OS X on a computer?
A. Wiping out all the data on a Mac's hard drive to install Tiger (otherwise known as Mac OS X 10.4) is an option, but it is not mandatory - you can choose from three different installation methods.
If you want to preserve most of the settings and files on your older Mac OS X system, you can choose the Simple Upgrade option, which installs the new version of Mac OS X on top of the old one and usually does not require you to reinstall your old programs. (Some applications, like third-party security software, may not work under Tiger, though, so check with the software maker if you're worried about compatibility.)
The Mac OS X installer's second option, Archive and Install, rounds up your existing system files and settings into an archive file and then puts a fresh new copy of Tiger on your hard drive. This option lets you import your old system's settings to your new operating system.
But if you want a completely clean start and whole new beginning for your Tiger system, you can choose Erase, the third option offered by the installer. It will wipe clean the hard drive or partition you've selected for Tiger and start from scratch.
