Keeping Sound Out to Keep Sound In If a good pair of headphones can make the world go away, noise-canceling headphones can put you on your own personal planet. Sony's new MDR-NC50 noise-canceling headphones try to block background sounds like rumbles from jet engines and subway trains that can overwhelm your chosen soundtrack. Most noise-canceling headphones have an internal microphone to detect certain frequencies of environmental noise in the background. Special circuits then create an inverted sound wave that is calculated to cancel out the noise. Sony's version can be used as standard headphones for quiet situations, and can leap into noise-canceling action with the push of a button when life becomes too loud outside. The MDR-NC50 headphones will be available in stores this month for about $200, less than similar models from other manufacturers, and can be preordered at www .sonystyle.com. The headphones come with a carrying case and a plug adapter for airline in-flight audio systems. There is also a handy switch on the left earpiece to turn off the audio temporarily, for those times when you need to listen to public announcements or other incoming noise that it might not be wise to cancel.
