EU executive takes action on mobile phone charges BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Phone companies charge consumers too much for using their mobile phones while abroad, the European Commission said on Monday, promising to take action to ensure there was full competition in the market. The Commission has been investigating the price of wholesale roaming charges in Germany and Britain between 1997 and 2003 amid accusations that mobile phone operators are ripping off customers who make mobile calls while abroad. "In spite of first signs of movement in the markets, the Commission is not satisfied that the prices to be paid by consumers already reflect the result of effective competition," the European Union executive said in a statement. "The Commission therefore will take measures to enhance the transparency of international mobile roaming charges to allow consumers the choice of the best offer." The measures, however, do not include regulating roaming charges, a spokesman said. "Regulation is not something we foresee ... (We) hope the market would regulate itself," Commission spokesman Martin Selmayr told a daily news briefing. News Sourcehttp://www.microsite.reuters.com
