Bouygues Telecom launches EDGE business service PARIS (Reuters) - Bouygues Telecom (BOUY.PA: Quote, Profile, Research) , France's third largest mobile operator, launched its higher-speed EDGE service for businesses on Thursday and said it would extend the new offer to consumers in October. As opposed to larger rivals Orange (FTE.PA: Quote, Profile, Research) and SFR (EAUG.PA: Quote, Profile, Research) , which launched third-generation services late last year, Bouygues has made the strategic choice to focus solely on EDGE, which is based on second generation GSM technology and has less bandwidth than 3G but is also cheaper to deploy. Bouygues Telecom, however, holds a license for 3G services. Earlier this month, the French telecoms regulator, ART, gave Bouygues Telecom until May 2007 to launch 3G. The telecoms unit of the French construction and real-estate group said it would wait for the upgraded version of 3G mobile services called HSDPA to be available before launching its own 3G service.
