BBC offers mobile seaside service
Mobile phone users visiting Britain's seaside will soon be able to access local information via the BBC.
By pointing their mobile phones at plaques placed in 100 coastal locations, people will be able to access material from the new BBC Two series Coast.
The service provides contributions from local people and narrated pieces about the area they are visiting.
Areas covered by Coast Mobile include Cornwall, Devon, Liverpool and Norfolk.
The access points will be based around 12 coastal walks, with eight interactive stops on each walk.
Barcode data
Phone operators O2 and Vodafone will be making phones available for the public to borrow for the trial.
While the content is free, operator charges will apply. With each clip lasting around two minutes, the average cost for all eight is likely to be about £2.
The system will use data codes, which work in a similar way to supermarket barcodes.
Mobile phone users with a handset using the Series 60 platform, which is based on the Symbian operating system, simply point their camera phone at the plaque.
The data code will be captured and automatically connect to the BBC content.
