After completion of your website development, the crucial issue that follows is web hosting. The biggest confusion is what type of server to choose, whether Linux based server is better than windows based server and vice versa. Linux based server is generally cheaper than the Windows based servers.
# Type of website:
If your website contains "static pages" i..e simple graphics and texts then it is advisable to go for Linux based servers. The obvious reason is "Cost Factor". Don't fall into the perception that Linux based server can`t handle complex websites. Its processing capability is similar to that of windows based operating system. But high end servers are not required for dealing with simple static pages content website, so why not try to reduce hosting cost.
# Programming languages used for coding:
Be very sure about the programming languages that is used for coding your website. Interactive sites usually rely on ASP, PHP or Perl type languages. the type of language to be used for coding of your website depends on the requirements that you have and the type of business that you would like to perform through your website. It is important to note that PHP and Perl are Linux based and ASP Windows. So seek help from the web developers before you decide on the hosting server. Suppose you opt to use ASP, then you’ll essentially require Windows hosting. If you are told that ASP is available on Linux hosting packages and that is true even, But keep in mind it might not work as well on Linux as they would on Windows.
# Functionality of your website:
If your website have complex features like e-commerce, members only area, live help etc., then the server operating system becomes crucial. For incorporating Interactive features onto your site, which essentially requires a server side coding, you would require coding on the softwares like ASP, PHP and Perl.
# Performance and speed:
There is not much difference between Linux and Windows when it comes to speed and performance. What matters after all is the hardware that your hosting company is using. If possible, ensure that your website host is properly upgrading his system in order to provide you with better services throughout.
