Screen resolutions for websites
Normally one would find that some webpages doesn`t fit well on the screen resolution that they are viewing. Problems like scroll bar might appear, graphics distortion etc. are very common as a result the user doesn`t find that particular website very interesting. So it is necessary for the website designer to make the website that fits best to all possible resolutions and test them before making the website functional. The worst problem is that, if you have designed a website for 800 x 600 resolutions and the visitor is watching it in 1024 X 720 resolution, then the visitor might think that the webdesigner has wasted lots of space while designing the website. This damages the image of the website owner as well as the website designer's image.
Research shows that mostly users view through 1024 X 720 resolution. Although this is just a trend but this is an important factor that must be kept in mind while designing a website. People tends to move to higher resolutions and so it is important to make your website flexible in order to adept to all kind of resolutions.
Some tips to design your website compatible to all kinds of resolutions are:
1) It is important to start designing your website in lowest resolutions. This needs some analysis about the resolutions that your website visitors tends to view. The lowest screen resolution now used mostly is 800 x 600. So if you start designing your website on low resolutions, this will ensure that the viewers will be able to view your website on this resolution(800 X 600 resolution here) and higher.
2) After getting the lowest resolution informations start designing your website on this resolution as platform. This will further ensure that all the graphics and animations that you design for the site needs to be optimised for this resolution.
3) If you are using tables for designing, make sure that you use percentage specifications in regard to their height, width etc..This will automatically adjust your contents to the resolution that your visitor is using. refrain from using "pixels" specifications as it can distort the design for other screen resolution that the current resolution which you are using as "Platform".
Thumbrule: If you were to design a site for a 800 x 600 resolution, you would probably make a table with width 800 px and height 600 px. Now if you were to design a web site for all resolutions you need to make a table with width and height 100%, so that whatever the screen resolution may be the web page will scale to fit the page.
4) cell measurement on the table needs to be in terms of "pixels" and the cell for the content needs to be in "percentage" specification.
