Opt-In Email Collecting
Opt-In Email Collecting
Opt-In Emails are emails of a recipient who expects to receive an offer related to their interest. Therefore this is NOT spam.
How are Opt-In Email Addresses collected?
Opt-In emails are collected in a variety of ways. Some sites may tell visitors that if they subscribe to their newsletter they will receive updates and promotions that will be of interest to them. Sometimes these simple offers work. Other times people have been so used to seeing these kind of offers so they may be a little more reluctant to give out their information. Since this is the case you’ll just have to be a little more creative.
One way you could do this is offer free information in exchange for their name and email address. If the offer for the information seems enticing enough, people will go for it. Make it very clear what they are going to receive INSTANTLY and why it’s VALUABLE to them.
Another approach could be starting a survey. For instance at one point we started a survey on www.runquicker.com where we asked the question, “Is running faster genetic?” With a “yes” or “no” response. People could vote their answer, and in order to see how they answered compared to other people who took the survey they would have to fill out their name and email address. Survey results would then be emailed to them. And yep, I now had their email information for a follow up.
One or all of these methods could be applied to the same web site. There’s definitely more than one way to skin a cat, so play with it a little bit, YOU might be able to come up with something better.
What makes Opt-In Email lists so valuable?
1. The people in an Opt-In Email list have AGREED to receive emails related to their interests, so they are receptive to your email message when it comes.
2. The people in an Opt-In Email list if properly targeted are MORE LIKELY to buy a product related to their interests.
3. Opt-in Email is a quick and easy way to reach thousands even millions of people at the click of a button.
Why should you start collecting Opt-In Email from YOUR web site?
1. Most new visitors to your site aren’t going to buy the first time around. You should attempt to capture their information. You are much more likely to sell them in the future with repeated contact.
2. By using tools like the Apply Leads Mail Management system http://www.applytools.com/applyLeads.html you can make managing your email opt-in list and sending them personalized emails a breeze.
WHAT I RECOMMEND
1. Develop what you’re going to offer in exchange for a visitors information – (1) name and (2) email. Are you going to offer a newsletter? A promotional coupon? A free E-book? Make sure whatever your offer is, it’s compelling.
2. Prominently display the creative that’s going to be used to capture visitor’s information. It should be (1) exciting, (2) to the point, and (3) easy to submit information all at once. You could place this creative on your home page, or on all the pages of your site.
3. Make sure your creative is attached to a mailing system like Apply Leads, or database that will allow you to go back and later send out a mailing to all these people that are subscribing.
4. Send out whatever information you are promoting in a timely manner.
(You may need the assistance of a web developer to help pull this whole system together, but it’s worth it.)
That’s it! With this system in place, all of your marketing efforts that bring traffic to your site are strengthened. And as long as you maintain your email list and send out worthwhile content you should be able to develop a mini “cash cow” from your web site’s traffic.
(Important note: If you ever plan on selling your opt-in email list -- make sure you let people know before they subscribe. Or Visa-versa, if it’s just YOU using their information, inform your subscribers – they will appreciate knowing that their information is going to be kept secure.)
