Open Directory Project
The Open Directory Project (ODP) is a site directory run by volunteer editors. They provide feed for most of the search engines. This is one of the great internet success stories of 1999. The first edition of the ODP was known as NewHoo (a play on Yahoo). Netscape provided server space for the NewHoo directory and it was collectively renamed The ODP. These ODPs are human driven programs unlike search engine crawlers.
Some of the tips to submit your website to one of the ODPs:
1) Choosing the correct category:
It is important to choose the category where you would like to submit your website URL. For a website design company, the ideal category would be website design company, new website design company, website development company etc. So be careful while selecting a category for your ODP listing.
2) Unique content:
The contents of your website must be unique. This will protect your website from content duplication. If your website is the exact copy of another website than your listing may get rejected.
3) Contact informations on the website:
Most of the ODPs don't accept those websites which doesn't provide proper contact informations. Contact informations includes e-mail, addres, telephone number, company name etc.. This will help the customers to know that the website is genuine and the company is serious about doing business. Those websites which don't provide those informations are considered fake outwardly.
4) Check errors:
Avoid making errors onto the contents of your website. It is important to know that in ODPs, the editors manually check your website and so they mightn't like too many errors onto your website. This may lead to rejection of your website listing with the ODP.
5) Avoid multiple submission:
Don't submit your website more than once onto the ODPs. Otherwise it gives a wrong impression about your company. the editor might think that you are trying to spam the directory and hence rejects your submission. But if your website is huge, then you can submit to more than one category in the entire Directory.
6) Proper contact with the Directory creator:
It is necessary that you must go by proper way in order to get your website listed in the ODP. If the Directory service is maintained by an editor, then you can mail him in order to get permission to submit your website.
