Link Popularity
Link popularity is a measure of the quantity and quality of other web sites
A website or web site (often shortened to a site) is a collection of web pages, that is, documents accessible via the World Wide Web on the Internet. The pages of a website will be accessed from a common root URL, the homepage, and usually reside on the same physical server. The URLs of the pages organize them into a hierarchy, although the hyperlinks between them control how the reader perceives the overall structure.

It is similar to a citation in literature. Combined with a data network and suitable access protocol, it can be used to fetch the resource referenced. This can then be saved, viewed, or displayed as part of the referencing document.
The most common type of hyperlink is the

Hypertext is browsed using a program called a web browser which retrieves pieces of information (called "documents" or "web pages") from web servers (or "web sites") and displays them on your screen. You can then follow hyperlinks on each page to other documents or even send information back to the server to interact with it. The act of following hyperlinks is often called "surfing" the web.

A search engine is a program designed to help the user access files stored on a computer, for example a public server on the World Wide Web, by allowing to ask for documents meeting certain criteria (typically those containing a given word, a set of words, or a phrase) and retrieving files that match those criteria. Unlike an index document that organizes files in a predetermined way, a search engine looks for files only after the user has entered search criteria.

Search engines such as Google
Google is the most popular search engine on the World Wide Web. Through its website and client websites, such as AOL, Google receives roughly 200 million search requests per day. Google has its headquarters (called the "Googleplex") in Mountain View, California.
In addition to web pages, Google also provides services for searching images, Usenet newsgroups, news sites, and items for sale online. In April 2004, Google contained 4.28 billion web pages, 880 million images and 845 million Usenet messages in its index; a total of 6 billion items. It also caches much of the content that it indexes.

A webpage or web page is a "page" of the World Wide Web, usually in HTML format (the file extensions are generally *.htm and *.html) and with hypertext links to enable navigation from one page or section to another. Webpages often use associated graphics files to provide illustration, and these too can be clickable links. A webpage is displayed using a web browser, and can be designed to make use of applets (subprograms than run inside the page) which often provide motion graphics, interaction, and sound.

In mathematics and computer science, a finite graph is often represented by its adjacency matrix. The adjacency matrix of a directed or undirected graph (with n vertices, say) is the n-by-n matrix whose entry in row i and column j gives the number of edges from the i-th to the j-th vertex. (An alternative way to store graphs in computers, especially graphs with few edges, is given by the incidence matrix.)

Content-poor sites will have difficulty attracting any links. Link popularity assumes that not all incoming links An incoming link usually means a hyperlink coming from another resource to the current one, especially on the World Wide Web.
Analysis of incoming links is useful to determine where visitors to a particular resource (such a web page) may 'arrive' from. The Google search engine has a facility to search for incoming links. The quantity and source of incoming links to a particular page is a major feature of Google's PageRank algorithm.

On the World Wide Web, a homepage is the starting point, or root of a website, a group of pages belonging to the same person, group, business or any other organization. The home page usually includes basic information on the theme of the whole website, and links to other related pages. It has the shortest URL: just the domain name.

To search for pages linking to a specific site, simply enter the URL
A Uniform Resource Locator, URL (pronounced as "earl" (SAMPA: [@rl]) or spelled out), or web address, is a standardized address for some resource (such as a document or image) on the Internet. First created by Tim Berners-Lee for use on the World Wide Web, the currently used forms are detailed by IETF standard RFC 2396 (1998).
The URL was a fundamental innovation in the history of the Internet. It combines into one simple address the four basic items of information necessary to find a document anywhere on the Internet:
The protocol to use to communicate with that machine
The machine or domain name to go to
An open network port on the target machine connected to some service
The path or file name on that machine

The name, which means "a view from above" or "high view", originated in 1995 with scientists at Digital Equipment Corporation's Research lab in Palo Alto, California. It was for that reason originally launched at altavista.digital.com.
They devised a method to store every word of every HTML page on the Internet in a fast, searchable index. This led to AltaVista's development of the first searchable, full-text database of that part of the World Wide Web indexed by AltaVista

It was bebuted in 1999 introduced by Fast Search and Transfer and used primarily as a show piece site. Fast started their search engine in 1997. Although rivalling Google in size and technology, AlltheWeb never became that popular.
AlltheWeb in fact had a few advantages over Google, such as a fresher database, more advanced search features, search clustering and a completely customizable look. In February 2003 Fast's web search division was bought by Overture. In March 2004 Overture itself was taken over by Yahoo!. Shorty after Yahoo!'s acquisition, the AlltheWeb site started using Yahoo!'s database and some of the advanced features were removed, such as FTP- Search.

Here are some strategies that are considered to be important to increase link popularity:
Keywords In computer science, a keyword is an identifier which indicates a specific command, and in most circumstances, has been reserved for core language usage. Some common keywords in many programming languages are: else, end, goto, if, print, return, switch, then, while, etc. There are usually restrictions about reusing keywords as names for user-defined objects such as variables or procedures, however some languages are extremely liberal in this approach (such as PostScript), allowing core keywords to be redefined for specific purposes. Languages vary as to what is provided as a keyword and what is a library routine, for example some languages provide keywords for

Webmaster or Webmistress is a commonly used term that refers to the person or persons responsible for a specific website.
On a smaller site, the webmaster will typically be the owner, designer, developer and programmer in addition to writing the actual content. On larger sites the webmaster will act as a coordinator and overseer to the activities of other people working on the site and is usually an employee of the owner of the website, hence Webmaster can also be listed as an occupation.

Getting links from other web sites, particularly sites with high PageRank
PageRank is a family of algorithms for assigning numerical weightings to hyperlinked documents (or web pages) indexed by a search engine. Its properties are much discussed by search engine optimization (SEO) experts. The PageRank system is one of the methods that the most successful search engine, Google, uses to determine a page's relevance or importance. It was developed by Google's founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin while at Stanford University in 1998. As Google puts it :

Therefore, the webmaster should try to get links from other important sites offering information or products compatible or synergistic to his/her own site or from sites that cater to the same audience the webmaster does. The webmaster should explain the advantages to the potential link partner and the advantages his/her site has to their visitors. One way links are better than backlinks.
The webmaster should list his/her site in one or more of the major directories such as Yahoo! Yahoo! (spelled with the exclamation point) is a popular Internet portal and Web directory. It was founded by Stanford graduate students David Filo and Jerry Yang in January 1994 and incorporated in March 1995. Headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, Yahoo! is publicly traded on the Nasdaq stock exchange under the symbol YHOO.
According to Alexa Internet, it is today the most visited website on the Internet. The global network of Yahoo! websites received 1.9 billion page views per day as of March 2003.

The webmaster should only link to sites that he/she can trust, i.e. sites that do not use spammy tech.
The webmaster should not participate in link exchange programs or link farms On the World Wide Web, a link farm is a large group of web pages created with the intention of creating hyperlinks to one another. Link farms are normally created programmatically, rather than by human beings. This is usually done to try to influence Internet search engine rankings, in order to pick up hits from users. These link farms may also be used to promote other websites, directly or indirectly. Search engine operators usually attempt to detect link farms, and to remove them from their indices or penalize their content rank. FFA's are a particular type of link farm.

To increase link popularity, many webmasters interlink multiple domains that they own, but this is false play, as such links are not independent votes for a page and are only created to trick the search engines. See Spamdexing. In this context, closed circles are often used, but these should be avoided, as they hoard PageRank.
