HTML, as we all know is a programming language used to build Web Sites. This language decides the look of the Web pages and how the visitors will move around the Web Site. It has come into practice since 1990 and is one of the most popular languages. But this language is not without problems. To solve these problems, World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), which has developed interoperable technologies (specifications, guidelines, software, and tools) to lead the Web to its full potential, has come out with a unique solution, i.e.XHTML, in the year 1999. The Extensible HyperText Markup Language (XHTML) is a family of current and future document type and reproduces, subsets, and extends HTML, written inXML. XHTML is the successor of HTML.
HTML has the capacity of extending HTML. So many things are possible to be done with XHTML, which was an impossible task with HTML. Now the pages are understood by the computers as well as by the human beings. The question may arise in ones mind that computers already understand web pages, then what is the need of all hazards to be taken. But is it a reality that computers understand web pages? The answer is NO. Computer only knows how to display them so that we can view them. If we can use XHTML while making a web site then it will be possible on the part of the computer to understand what a web page intends to mean. Then the computer can go through a music site and let one know which is the most popular tune of the week .The potentialities are endless if one uses XHTML in the process of making a Web Site. Initially when HTML got its momentum different groups and companies added new elements and attributes to HTML arbitrarily. This caused chaos of different inter-operable versions of HTML. XML (X stands for Extensible) allows anyone to use any elements from different languages, but then how can a browser or a user agent know which one is from which language. For this Web Site Designer has to incorporate in the Web Site a name space declaration. XHTML will help him in this regard.
