"Stop!!, Don`t break the links while you revise your site.

There are many instances where it is found that while revising the site, people tends to erase the existing links with new ones. This turns up to be an absolute blunder for those. Just imagine, you put in so much of efforts to build those links and these are the links that helped you in page ranking, now you want to replace them with brand new links. Incorporating new links means dumping your previous efforts, previous ranking and starting all from the scratch.

So what to do when you want to change the entire layout of your site?

You can change the layouts but before you do that go through the links of your site and record the page rank of those pages.

E..g:

Your "intro" page has page rank 4/10

Your "Contact us" page has page rank 2/10

Your "Product" page has page rank 6/10

So you must utilise the "product" page for delivering all the informations when you consider the new layout. Doing so will automatically get the page listed under the new information within the search engines. It is not wise to re-use those pages having a very low page rank, like "Contact Us" page here. Usually anything higher than page rank 3 should be considered while forming a new layout for the site. This helps the search engine as well. It lets the search engine know that the site is changed and the site contains those pages with which "it"(Search engine) is conversant with.

Another problem in changing the web pages is that normally people "BookMarks" some of the pages of the site for their future referance or if they find some page of the site very interesting. Changing those pages will remove those Bookmarks and the users might feel that your site is down, deleted or doesn`t exist anymore.

So if you are discarding the old links that it is important for you to make your users know about the change. A usual trend is of showing a message "Page no longer exists". This will ensure that you won`t create a bad impression on your user`s mind.

So when re-designing, try re-using the higher ranking page of your site.

Equally important is to find and rectify problems of your old and outdated pages. Using a search engine you will be able to search all the pages realted to your site. You can rectify the problems on each pages and if you feel necessary, discard some of the old pages.
