The best method of bookmarking the website that you would again like to visit is creating the favicon.ico file, an icon file, for that website. This is to refrain from typing the entire website name every time you visit a website. You can just crete a bookmark and an icon will get displayed besides the URL address bar or to your "Favorite" menu.
What is favicon.ico? This is method by which the website URL is displayed next to the URL address in the browser`s location bar. This is facilitated by I.E5.0(Internet Explorer) and above. This associates a particular icon with the website in the bookmark. As soon as you enter a website, it requests for "favicon.ico" from the directory of your webpage. If it could n`t locate such file, then it will try to locate one from the root directory of your website. If your web browser can locate the favicon.ico file, the icon will also be displayed beside the website name in the "Favorites" menu, the location bar in IE, and the "Favorites" folder. Who invented this? It's a Microsoft invention. Internet Explorer will look for it when someone visits your site. If it's there, it'll be shown as the icon in the address bar with your URL. If it's not there, the browser shows IE's default picture of a piece of paper with an 'e' on it. It will also show with your webpage title in the favorites list. There is also an option where the Visitor can drag the icon out of the address bar onto their desktop to have a link to your site there too and the logo is used there at double size.Favicon.ico is also recognised by Netscape as well. How to make my favicon.ico? Just follow these simple steps in order to create this icon: 1) You need to Create an image file. It should be 16x16 pixels, although IE will also scale a 32x32 icon on the fly. generally people upload it to the root of your server as favicon.ico. But it doesn't always work like that. 2) Include the following code in your webpage between the <HEAD> and </HEAD> tags: <LINK REL="SHORTCUT ICON" HREF="http://www.yourwebsitename.com/favicon.ico"> But linking to your own icon, obviously. When you link to your icon like this, you can give it a different name to favicon.ico and can have lots of different favourites icons for different pages on your site by linking to different icons from each page. This is also an important way for website promotion as people can see your website icon every time they open their internet explorer.
