Bandwidth vs Data Transfer
These two words are normally used at a single breath but they are not the same, althrough they are closely related. Lets try to understand these concepts:
Bandwidth:
Bandwidth is the amount of data that can be transferred at a time. Normally a broadband connection gives 512kbps. This means that 512 KB of data can get transferred per second in those bandwidth. Bandwidth is fixed and this depends of the internet connection you choose for using.
Data Transfer:
Data transfer is the amount of data that actually gets transferred through a particular bandwidth. This is variable. At a particular time 200 KB of data can get Transferred and at some other time 400 KB of data can get transferred. The maximum data transfer is less than or equal to the bandwidth.
Which Bandwidth to choose:
A simple thumb rule while choosing your bandwidth is that, lesser the bandwidth the slower it will be your data transfer. so if you have more visitors, some of them will have to wait their turn. generally we encounter "page not found" error. That is the result of least data transfer.
How to determine bandwidth for your site:
Try to find out the following details in order to determine which bandwidth is best for your site:
1. Average number of visitors to your website.
2. Page size of each pages of your website.
3. Average number of pages viewed by each visitors.
Then calculate by multiplying:
Visitors x Page size x Page views x 30 days = Monthly Website Transfer
After getting the Monthly website transfer rate you will be able to find the bandwidth required for your site.
Good bandwidth requires huge investment as well. But if the number of visitors to your site is immense then it is better to switch over to higher bandwidth otherwise you might start loosing visitors to your site.
Manipulating Transfer Rate:
You can build a optimised website which will reduce the transfer rate of your site. Refrain from putting big file size graphics as this takes lots of bandwidth in order to load. Incorporate new technologies like streaming videos, Using mod-gzip to your site. Remove unwanted tags, white space and comments. Limit your META tags to those absolutely necessary. Having too many keywords is not search engine friendly.
