I’m surprised sometimes how such an elementary rule of sale can go unnoticed. When a potential buyer is ready to do business, contacting you should be easy for them to do. Use the following rules as a checklist for your own site’s accessibility for contact.
Contact Rule #1 – Make it EASY to call
It’s generally a good idea to put your toll free number in the header of ALL your pages. Even if you have a “contact” page, having a toll free number visible on all pages will make a split second decision to call you even easier for a potential customer.
Secondly what are your hours? Do you have operators or an answering service standing by 24 x 7 ? If you do, you should advertise this fact. If you don’t it may be worth considering.
A toll free number and accessible hours are should be a high priority for any business.
Contact Rule #2 – Make it EASY to email
I know this seems like an easy one, but you’d be amazed at how many people don’t put a primary contact email address ANYWHERE on their web site. If someone is interested in contacting them and didn’t want to call what other options are they left with? Having a contact form that may be acceptable, but it’s always a good idea to supply an email address on your contact page as well.
Contact Rule #3 – Make it EASY to submit
If you are selling any item over $500 you should probably have a contact form. A potential buyer is going to need to speak to a live human voice before making the purchase so make it easy for them to leave information and reserve an appointment. In my own After Dark site I’ve created links to our free quote form EVERYWHERE on my site. On the navigation menu, on all the pages, more than once in the body of some pages, there’s NO question on where to go when you need to submit a request for a quote.
Contact Rule #4 – Make it EASY to order
This rule applies to you if you plan on selling products. I’m always so amazed when the sole purpose of a web site is to GET ORDERS but a site will have me click through 8 or 9 different pages before I’m finally able to check out and place my order!
Thank goodness it isn’t like that in the real world. That’s like me walking into a Subway and having to go through a fun house mirror maze before I get my food. I’d starve to death before I got to the counter!
Your primary goal should be to decrease the amount of time or clicks it takes a potential customer to (A) FIND the product they want to the time they (B) ENTER their credit card information. In a recent survey 34% of consumers said they started to order online but BACKED OUT because the ordering process was too difficult. DO NOT LOSE MONEY OVER SOMETHING SO ELEMENTARY.
